OFFICER’S REPORT

Fishery orders

Report by the Chief Executive

Purpose of Report

To report progress with Fishery Orders

Recommendation

That progress with Fishery Order development be noted

1. The Fishery Order Development post

1.1 In February 2006, the Committee reviewed the work associated with renewing Fishery Orders within the District and with developing a new Order for Morecambe Bay. The Committee resolved to use the previously agreed new enforcement officer post to work on Fishery Order development in the first few years of the post.

1.2 This post has now been appointed and officers expect that the dedicated work on Fishery Orders will commence in June 2006.

2. Renewal of 2 Welsh Fishery Orders

2.1 As reported to the Committee in February 2006, The Menai Strait (West) Oyster, Mussel and Clam Fishery Order 1978 and the Conwy Estuary Mussel Fishery Regulating order 1948 expire in 2008 and part of the work of the Fishery Order Development Officer will be to ensure these orders are renewed. Fishery Officer, Dr Greta Hughes has expressed an interest in assisting with the renewal of these Orders as a job development opportunity. The CEO and PFO have agreed that assistance with the renewal of these Orders will form part of Dr Hughes work programme for the next 2-3 years.

3. Renewal of the Conwy Fishery Order

3.1 The proposals for progressing the renewal of the Conwy Order were approved by the Conwy Mussel Development group at its meeting in March 2006. A joint meeting of the Mussel Development Group and the Conwy Order Review group will be called as soon as possible with both Dr Hughes and the new Officer to discuss priorities for the renewed order.
