OFFICER’S REPORT

 

UPDATE ON CONFIRMATION OF NEW BYELAWS

 

Report by the Principal Fishery Officer

 

Purpose of Report

To appraise Members of the status of new Byelaws namely:

Byelaw 24 (Fixed nets-Wales),

Byelaw 25 (Drift Nets -Wales),

Byelaw 30 (Fishing for Lobster, Crawfish, Crab, Prawn and Whelk)

 

Recommendation

That the report be received.

1. Background

1.1 Members will be aware that three Byelaws are currently being revised to further enhance their effectiveness in the conservation of stocks.

1.2 Following lengthy negotiations during the summer of 2005, these Byelaws were submitted and 'made' at the November meeting of the Joint Committee.

1.3 In order to expedite due process, in December 2005 Officers submitted the Byelaws to DEFRA for initial comment prior to formal public advertisement. To date there has been no indication of likely comment, however Officers raised the issue with DEFRA officers on 13th January 2006, and expect to bring a verbal report to the February 2006 Joint Committee meeting.
