OFFICER’S REPORT
UPDATE ON CONFIRMATION OF NEW BYELAWS
Report by the Principal Fishery Officer
Purpose of Report
Over the last 12 months a number of byelaws have been revised or 'made'. This report updates Members on the current status of new byelaws.
Recommendation
That the report be received.
1. Byelaw 24 - Fixed Engines (Wales)
1.1 Confirmed and active from 22nd June 2006, this byelaw defines 26 estuarine areas in Wales, where the use of fixed (anchored) nets and certain mesh sizes are restricted or prohibited during the summer months, in order to protect salmonids
2. Byelaw 25 - Drift Nets (Wales)
2.1 Confirmed and active from 31st May 2006, this byelaw prohibits the use of drift nets in 24 estuarine areas of Wales, during the summer months, in order to protect salmonids
3. Byelaw 14 - Seasonal Closure (Cockles)
3.1 Confirmed and active from 5th June 2006, this new byelaw prohibits the fishing for and disturbance of cockles during the spawning season when spat is settling and adults are stressed.
4. Byelaw 30 - Permit to fish Lobster, Crawfish, Crab and Whelk .
4.1 Awaiting advertisement and confirmation. It is intended to advertise simultaneously with the new Byelaw 5 (Shellfish Permit). It is expected that confirmation will be received before December 2006. The byelaw sets up a permit scheme for non-commercial fishermen, restricts the number of pots that may be used, and sets bag limits for certain species of shellfish.
