Committee Patrol Vessels (1890 - 2006)

Main Patrol Vessels

1891, "Mavis" - Steamer bought second hand from brokers, Allen Bros. for £1,585. Sold out of service in 1892.

1892, "John Fell" - steamer. Built for the Lancashire Sea Fisheries by Muir & Houston of Glasgow to a design by G.L. Watson for £3,600. Sold out of service in 1901.

1901, "John Fell II" - (ex steam yacht "Ziska") bought from brokers for £8,250. Sold out of service in 1907.

1907, "James Fletcher" - steamer. Built for the Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Joint Committee by G. Philips & Son, Dartmouth for £12,000. LOA = 139' at 264 grt, speed = 12knots. Sold to Thomas Ward & Sons as scrap for £570 in 1936. War service - 1914 to 1918,  rammed and sank one German submarine. An unconfirmed claim of a second submarine sunk by depth charge. The small steamer "Lady Magdalene" was chartered from Bangor Corporation at £52 10s 0d per month during "James Fletcher's" war service.

1936, "Charles McIver" - steamer. Built for the Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Committee by A.J. Ingils of Glasgow for £24,930. A twin screw vessel. LOA = 153' at 432 grt. War service - 1940 to 1945, served as Armed Boarding Vessel. Sold out of service to Humber Conservancy Board for £10,250 in 1951.

1950, "Thomas S. Richardson" (ex yacht "Violanda," ex Royal Navy Defence Harbour Launch. Bought from brokers H.E. Bradley for £5,150. LOA = 72'. Twin screw, twin diesel engines at 152 bhp. Patroled all of the District until 1958 and then the Welsh part of the District until sold out of service to H. Jones as a survey vessel.

1959, "John Beardsworth" (ex MFV "Felicitous" A620. Built in 1948 by Herd & Mackanzie. Bought from brokers for £3,800. LOA = 69' at 39.68 grt. One 8 cylinder Gardener diesel, speed = 9 knots. Converted by Allenson's Boatyard, Freckleton.

1976, "Samuel Baxter" - built at Brombourgh for the Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Committee.

1985, "L & W Protector" - built for the Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Committee by William Osbourne, Littlehampton. LOA = 36.' Twin Ford Sabre diesel engines.

1996, "Aegis" - built for the North Western & North Wales Sea Fisheries Committee by Halmatic. LOA = 53.'

 

Area Patrol Boats

1894, "Piel Castle," patrol area, Haverigg Point to the River Ribble. Based on moorings in the River Wyre. Sold out of service in 1943.

1913, "Alpha," patrol area, Southern Cardigan Bay. Based at New Quay. Sold out of service in 1950.

"Formby," "Rock Light," "Eric,"

"Alice," patrol area, River Ribble to the River Dee. Based on New Brighton.

"Beta," patrol area, River Dee to North Cardigan Bay. Re-named "Sea Prefect."

"Delta," re-named "Sea Warden." Sold out of service during the 1950s.

1966, "A. Stopford" - built for the Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Committee at a cost of £16,000. LOA = 47' Watson class. Twin diesel engines, speed = 21 knots. Based at Portdinorwic. Sold out of service during the 1970s.

1986, "Gwyliwr" - Atlantic 21 RIB, twin 70hp Johnson outboards. Based at Pwllheli. Sold out of service in 1991.

 

Inflatables - operated by shore based Area Fishery Officers from 1982 to date.

16' Zodiac Grand Raid Class, 40hp Yamaha outboard.

"Zodiac Alpha" - Pwllheli, "Zodiac Bravo" - Morecambe, "Zodiac Echo" - Aberystwyth, "Zodiac Foxtrot" - Conwy.
