Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Committee's Navigation and Fish Biology Classes

From 1900s to the late 1920s, early 1930s, Lancashire & Western Sea Fisheries Committee held Navigation and Fish Biology classes for fishermen. The first classes were held in Liverpool but from March, 1900, they were held on Roe Island, Barrow-in-Furness. L&WSFC rented the building on the right of the photograph from the Furness Railway Company on a half yearly rental basis. The laboratory was originally intended to be a hatchery for all types of fish and shellfish.

The courses lasted for a week and the fishermen received 5/- for attending. L&WSFC also issued all those who attended with a little book showing the entire syllabus including drawings and diagrams. By the 1920s, the fishermen were paid 10/- per week for attending. They were transported from their home area on board L&WSFCs patrol boat and landed on Roa Island where they stayed for the entire week.
