Light blue female (l), light mottled deep water female (r) |
Large light blue female |
There is considerable variation in colour amongst lobsters depending on habitat and water depth. Large light blue lobsters are almost invariably female. Rust brown coloured lobsters are taken from wrecks while light mottled lobsters come from deep water.
Lobsters - Mutation
Two crusher claws instead of a crusher and cutter claw
Claw mutations occasionally occur in lobsters. Some lobsters have two cutter claws while others have two crusher claws. Mutations are more frequent in lobsters reared in hatcheries and released as juveniles. The phenomenon is believed to be diet related.
