BYELAW 12 – RESTRICTIONS ON FISHING FOR BIVALVE MOLLUSCAN SHELLFISH VARIATION TO PERMITTED FISHING AREAS
As from 0001 hours on Tuesday, 25th March 2008, dredging for scallops is prohibited in Area 1A as defined on the enclosed maps B and D (dated 19th March 2008). Therefore all vessels are prohibited from dredging for scallops inside the 3 mile fishery limit from Cemaes Head to New Quay Head.
This closure will remain in place until midnight on the 31st May 2008.
The Committee has introduced this restriction in response to environmental concerns that designated features within the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) will be damaged by scallop dredging. Such damage could lead to European Court action against the UK Government for failing to protect the SAC.
The Committee will keep Byelaw 12 authorisations under review and may modify restricted areas to take account of changes in patterns of fishing.
